FAQ

I built the pattern, and nothing happens when I click

Work through these in order:

  1. Check your hand. If you hold a block, a bucket of water or lava, redstone, or string, the click places it as normal. Try again with an empty hand.
  2. Click the heart. Each rune wakes from one block, marked with a golden glow on its rune page. You can also click the block just beneath it.
  3. Look for a message. A rune that matches and still refuses always says why: missing permission, missing Initiation, a ward nearby, or a disabled rune.
  4. Look for particles. When a pattern is almost right, Runic marks up to three wrong blocks and whispers a hint. See Near-miss hints.
  5. Check the Tier blocks. Every T in a pattern must be the same block, with a Tier of 1 or more. Some runes ask for a particular Tier, such as Initiation, which takes Tier 1 only.
  6. Check the empty cells. Cells shown as empty must hold air or a Tier 0 block. A torch, a slab, or a stray flower in the wrong place keeps the rune asleep.
  7. Check the signature. A signature arm can hold any block of Tier 1 or more, except the Tier block itself.

Still stuck? Some held items claim the click first, such as an item bound with Oracle or a designator. Put it away and try again.

How do I find a block's Tier?

Three ways:

  • Browse Block tiers on this wiki, which lists every block.
  • Bind Oracle to an item. Touch any block with that item and it tells you its Tier. Oracle works before Initiation, so it makes a good first rune.
  • Ask server staff to run /runic tier <block>.

Do I need Initiation?

On most servers, yes. Runes stay cold until you perform the rite. See Initiation and the Primer. Server owners can switch the requirement off with require-initiation: false in config.yml.

Why did my rune vanish?

Many runes burn away when they wake. Their blocks are spent to pay for the magic, and the result lives on elsewhere: in your tool, in a chest, in the land, or in you. Each rune page lists what it spends under Spent on use, and the diagram marks spent blocks with a corner mark. See What a rune spends.

My enchanted tool stopped working

Most item magic runs on charges. The item's lore shows the effect and how many charges are left, such as ◆ Power Tool (12). When the count reaches zero, the effect fades. Wake the same rune again with the item in hand to add more charges. See Charges and bound items.

Tools, weapons, and armour need forging at a Runic Anvil before they take rune magic at all.

Can other players use my runes?

Anyone with permission can wake a rune they find in the world. Some magic answers only to the player who raised it: only you can lower your ward, manage your Domain, or claim your travel signature. See Ownership.

How can I see the magic around me?

  • Diviner binds a glass eye that reads the magic on you and your held item.
  • Aether Goggles make nearby magic glow in its school's colour.
  • Immersion toggles Runic Sight, a chat feed of the magic around you.

See Aether Goggles and Runic Sight.

How do I remove magic?

Dispel strips the magic from your held item at Tier 1, from you as well at Tier 2, and from the world around you at Tier 3 and above. Runes that stay in the world end when you break their pattern.

Can redstone trigger runes?

Yes. Sensor runes watch for pressure, redstone signals, blocks, weather, or a hit, and wake the runes you mark with a designator. See Automation.

Which Minecraft versions does Runic support?

Runic runs on Spigot and Paper from Minecraft 1.13 up to the newest releases. Runes built around newer blocks or mobs need a newer server, and each rune page lists its lowest version. See Version support.

Runes stay silent in one world

Server owners can switch Runic off per world with disabled-worlds in config.yml. Ask your server staff.
