Your first runes
The best first project in Runic is a pair of travel runes. A Waypoint marks a destination, and a Teleporter carries you there. Together they teach the three ideas you will use everywhere: Tier blocks, the heart, and signatures.
You will need:
- Your Initiation, done.
- About 40 blocks of one Tier 1 material, such as cobblestone. These are your Tier blocks.
- Four other blocks for the signature, such as oak planks, sandstone, bricks, and glass. Any block with a Tier of 1 or more works, as long as it differs from your Tier blocks.
Signatures read by compass direction. Press F3 and check the Facing line to find north, or watch where the sun rises: it comes up in the east.
Step 1: Choose a signature
A signature is four blocks, one per compass direction. It is the name of your destination, and every Teleporter that spells the same name will travel there.
Pick four blocks and decide which goes where. For example:
| Direction | Block |
|---|---|
| North | Oak Planks |
| East | Sandstone |
| South | Bricks |
| West | Glass |
Each signature belongs to one destination on the whole server. If someone else already owns yours, the Waypoint tells you so, and you can choose a different set of blocks.
Step 2: Build the Waypoint
Go to where you want to arrive and build the Waypoint.
- Tier block × 17Every T is the same block, and that block’s Tier sets the rune’s strength.
- Signature block × 4Each arm holds a Tier 1+ block other than the Tier block, or stays empty (air or Tier 0). Read by compass direction, the arms spell the rune’s signature.
- Optional cell × 4Leave it empty or place a block here; the rune wakes either way.
- Activation blockThe glowing cell is the one to click.
- Lay a five-by-five square of your Tier blocks. The four corners are optional: leave them empty or fill them with anything.
- The centre block is the heart. It is a Tier block too.
- Replace the four blocks touching the heart with your signature: the oak planks on the north side of the heart, the sandstone on the east, and so on.
- Right-click the heart.
You see Waypoint attuned (Tier 1). Travelers who match this signature will arrive here. The Waypoint stays in the world. Leave it standing; breaking it breaks the link.
A Waypoint can lie on the ground, stand on a wall, or hang from a ceiling. Travelers step out on the open side.
Step 3: Build the Teleporter
Go back to where you want to leave from and build the Teleporter.
- Tier block × 16Every T is the same block, and that block’s Tier sets the rune’s strength.
- Signature block × 4Each arm holds a Tier 1+ block other than the Tier block, or stays empty (air or Tier 0). Read by compass direction, the arms spell the rune’s signature.
- Any block except the Tier block × 1Any block at all, apart from the block the T tiles use.
- Air or a Tier 0 block × 4Leave these as air, or fill them with Tier 0 blocks such as dirt or stone.
- Activation blockThe glowing cell is the one to click.
- Lay a five-by-five square, leaving the four corners empty (air, or Tier 0 blocks like grass or stone).
- Fill the ring around the centre with your Tier blocks.
- Put your signature in the middle of each outer edge: oak planks in the middle of the north edge, sandstone in the middle of the east edge, bricks south, glass west. These must match the Waypoint's arms direction for direction.
- The centre is the heart. It can be any block except your Tier block, or it can stay empty.
- Right-click the heart.
You see The teleporter drinks the signature and waits. The four signature blocks turn to stone. The Teleporter has memorised its destination, and stone counts as an empty arm, so the link is set.
Step 4: Travel
Right-click the Teleporter's heart again. The world folds around you, and you arrive at the Waypoint.
From now on, every touch of the heart is a trip. The Teleporter stays in the world and keeps working.
When it does not work
| Message | What it means |
|---|---|
| The rune hums, but no waypoint answers this signature. | No Waypoint carries this signature. Check that each signature block sits on the same compass side on both runes. |
| The destination waypoint (Tier 4) outclasses this rune (Tier 1) — rebuild it from higher-Tier blocks. | The Waypoint was drawn in a higher Tier than the Teleporter. Rebuild the Teleporter in blocks of at least the Waypoint's Tier. |
| The destination waypoint lies broken — its attunement fades away. | Something broke the Waypoint's pattern. Rebuild it and attune it again. |
| No safe landing space could be found at the destination. | Clear space around the Waypoint's open side. |
| This signature leads to another world, and such travel is forbidden here. | The server keeps travel within one world. |
| The rune stays cold — a Teleport Ward smothers such magic here. | The Teleporter stands inside a Teleport Ward. Teleport Wards also turn away arrivals. |
If nothing happens at all when you click, the pattern does not match yet. Look for particles: when a rune is almost right, Runic marks up to three wrong blocks and whispers a hint. See Near-miss hints.
Going further
- Re-link a Teleporter. Place a new signature in its four arms and right-click the heart. It drinks the new signature and points to the new destination.
- Never re-link again. A Master Teleporter keeps its signature. Swap the signature blocks and the destination follows.
- One quick trip. A Personal Teleport is a small three-by-three rune that burns away, signature and all, carrying you once.
- Walk-through gates. Viatorem's Arch is an upright doorway to a Waypoint.
- The whole network. Travel covers every travel rune, from Transport Rings to Stargates.
